Walk to the World Cup: week three

Posted: June 29th, 2010 - Category: North Tyneside South Tyneside Walk to the World Cup

England might have been knocked out the World Cup by Germany, but pupils across North and South Tyneside are still on track to reach their goal – an arrival in South Africa in time for the World Cup final on July 11th.

In fact, some schools that have been holding special walking events could arrive at the destination as early as next week!

Premiership

Sea View Primary School in South Tyneside has consolidated its lead at the top of the Premier League. Despite a slight dip in distance, the youngsters still managed to cover more than 2,200kms last week. It means the school’s total distance is 6873kms, and that puts the pupils in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Their South Tyneside arch rivals, Westoe Crown Primary School, have slipped back slightly. Last week they were just 300kms behind, but this wee the gap at the top of the league has widened to nearly 560kms.

North of the River, Star of the Sea are keeping up the pressure on the two frontrunners. They’re just 500kms behind Westoe Primary, and could still break the South Tyneside domination of the race so far.

At the bottom of the league, but still covering fantastic distances is Denbigh Community Primary School on North Tyneside. They have completed 2,256 since they set off, and they are still on course to arrive in South Africa before July 11th.

Championship

In the Championship, Greenfields Community Primary School has maintained its lead at the top of the table, keeping Marsden Primary School from South Tyneside at bay. The youngsters at Greenfields have racked up more than 3800km, which means they are in Niger at the moment. They are going to have to keep up their good work rate, though, because Marsden and St Matthews are not far behind.

Richardson Dees Primary School, have shown the largest increase of the week. It came from nowhere to post 1580kms. But can they continue to rack up the miles they will need to start climbing the table?

The Championship mid table is very close. Five teams – Whitburn Village, Whitley Lodge, Fordley and the two St Joseph’s schools are all within 500kms of each other.

Minnows

There’s some fierce competition brewing in the Minnows league. St Mary’s, which, last week, came out of nowhere, have maintained its lead over North Tyneside rival, Carville Primary School. But the gap is only about 300kms and could be overturned easily. With two weeks still to play, this is perhaps the tightest league and it’s anybody’s game.

Behind them – and not by far – St Bartholomew’s on North Tyneside is leading the chase, but they have South Tyneside rivals St James’ and Bede Burn snapping at their heels too.

There’s still everything to play for!
